Global Talent visa holders may qualify for indefinite leave to remain (ILR), also known as settlement, after 3 or 5 years of continuous residence, depending on how they qualified for the Global Talent route. Applicants endorsed as Exceptional Talent by Arts Council England or Tech Nation can qualify after 3 years, while applicants endorsed as Exceptional Promise by those bodies generally need 5 years. Several science and research endorsement routes, as well as applicants who qualified through an eligible prestigious prize, also have a 3-year route.
The qualifying period is only one part of the requirements. Applicants must also meet the continuous residence, earnings, English language, Life in the UK, and other settlement requirements that apply to their application.
How Many Years Do You Need for Global Talent ILR?
The current rules provide these qualifying periods:
- Royal Society, British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering, or UKRI endorsement: 3 years
- Arts Council England or Tech Nation – Exceptional Talent: 3 years
- Arts Council England or Tech Nation – Exceptional Promise: 5 years
- Eligible prestigious prize: 3 years
These periods are set out in Appendix Global Talent and reflected in the current GOV.UK ILR guidance.
Can Previous UK Visa Time Count?
Yes. The Global Talent settlement rules allow qualifying time on several routes to be combined.
These currently include:
- Global Talent
- Innovator Founder
- Skilled Worker
- T2 Minister of Religion
- International Sportsperson
- Certain Tier 1 permission
- Scale-up
- Representative of an Overseas Business
- Note: Time spent in the UK as a dependant does not count towards the main applicant’s qualifying period.
What Is the 180-Day Rule?
Global Talent settlement applicants must meet the continuous residence requirement. Under the current Appendix Continuous Residence, an applicant normally must not have been outside the UK for more than 180 days in any rolling 12-month period. There are specified exceptions, so the calculation is not always as simple as counting every day spent overseas. Certain Global Talent applicants endorsed by the Royal Society, British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering, or UKRI can also benefit from specific rules relating to research absences. This is why keeping a clear record of travel throughout the qualifying period can be useful when preparing for settlement.
Do You Need to Show UK Earnings?
Yes. The current Global Talent settlement rules require the applicant to have earned money in the UK during their last period of permission in the relevant field.
- For an applicant who originally qualified through endorsement, this is the field in which they were previously endorsed.
- For someone who qualified through a qualifying prize, it relates to the subject matter of that prize.
What About English Language Requirements?
The English requirement is changing in 2027.
- Applications made before 26 March 2027: The current rule requires English at B1 level in speaking and listening, unless an exemption applies.
- Applications made on or after 26 March 2027: The requirement rises to B2 level in speaking and listening, unless an exemption applies.
- Applicants must also meet the Knowledge of Life in the UK requirement unless exempt. This date is important for anyone whose qualifying period is approaching in 2027 or later. The requirement that applies is linked to the date of the settlement application.
Does Your Endorsement Need to Remain Valid?
For settlement, an endorsement used to qualify for the route must not have been withdrawn. The rules also require the applicant to have earned money in the UK in the relevant field during their last period of permission. You should therefore keep records of your professional work and earnings rather than treating settlement as something that begins only when you are ready to apply.
What About Dependants?
Dependants have a separate settlement route. A Global Talent dependant partner must generally complete 5 years in the UK as a qualifying dependant partner before applying for settlement. GOV.UK also states that eligible partners and children can apply to settle permanently when they meet the relevant requirements. Therefore, the lead applicant’s 3-year Global Talent settlement period does not automatically mean that a dependant partner can settle after 3 years.
A Simple ILR Preparation Checklist
Before applying, check:
- Whether your route requires 3 or 5 years.
- Which visa periods you are counting towards the qualifying period.
- Your UK travel and absence history (180-day rule).
- Evidence of relevant UK earnings.
- The English requirement (B1 vs. B2) that applies on your application date.
- The Life in the UK requirement.
- Whether your endorsement remains valid where required.
You must also meet the relevant validity and suitability requirements under the Immigration Rules. For people planning their wider UK talent journey, eMigr8 has a UK Global Talent Visa guide and a UK settlement route within its visa routes platform. Its Visa Architect assessment can also be used as an early planning tool.
These resources are educational and preparation-focused; eMigr8 states that it does not provide legal advice or immigration consultation.
Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Qualifying time on Skilled Worker and several other permitted routes can be combined with Global Talent time.
